چکیده

A recently developed esterifi cation method in our laboratory was applied to permanent hydrophobization of wood surfaces. Specifi cally, the covalent attachment of fl uoroorganyl substituents to wood hydroxy groups via benzotriazolyl-activated, substituted benzoic acids was in focus. Weight percent gain values from 10 % to 28 % were obtained on Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) sapwood veneer chips. It proved feasible to lower the temperature for wood modifi cation from 150 ° C to 120 ° C, or even to 70 ° C so that thermal decomposition of wood during modifi cation can be neglected. The modifi ed chips were analyzed by attenuated total refl ection – infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Covalent attachment of the fl uorobenzoic acids led to a very high, permanent hydrophobicity of the wood surface, documented by outstanding contact angles of up to 143 ° .

Improvement of Collapsibility of Sodium Silicate Bonded Cores for Aluminium Casting

This paper examines the compressive strength of sodium silicate bonded cores for aluminum casting with different additives. Various materials are used as additives among which it is found that 5% sand size bauxite has the best effect on both gas strength and de-coring 98.5% silica content sand with 70-90 AFS No. with 4% sodium silicate is used. The results indicate that although very good colla...

Hydrophobization of glass surface by adsorption of poly(dimethylsiloxane).

Silica or glass particles are introduced in a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) matrix for various applications. A particular feature of these systems is that PDMS adsorbs on the surface of the dispersed particles, thus rendering them more hydrophobic with time. The mechanism of this process of in situ hydrophobization is still poorly understood. The major aims of the present study are (1) to quant...

Acetylation of wood – A review

Wood is a porous three dimensional, hydroscopic, viscoelastic, anisotropic bio-polymer composite composed of an interconnecting matrix of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin with minor amounts of inorganic elements and organic extractives. Some, but not all, of the cell wall polymer hydroxyl groups are accessible to moisture and these accessible hydroxyls form hydrogen bonds with water. As the...

H2XP:OH2 Complexes: Hydrogen vs. Pnicogen Bonds

A search of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) was carried out for phosphine-water and arsine-water complexes in which water is either the proton donor in hydrogen-bonded complexes, or the electron-pair donor in pnicogen-bonded complexes. The range of experimental P-O distances in the phosphine complexes is consistent with the results of ab initio MP2/aug’-cc-pVTZ calculations carried out ...
